Nothing to set up
If your business type collects tips, food, drinks, services, the tip step is already in your checkout. Restaurants and cafes see it on the payment screen; service businesses see it too. Retail checkouts skip it entirely, on purpose: nobody tips for a candle.
There's no tip switch to find and no setup to do. This guide is about knowing what happens in that moment, so you're not learning it in front of a customer.
What the tip moment looks like
Ring up the sale and get to the payment screen. The Tip presets sit right there, percentage buttons like 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%.
Tap one and the tip lands on the total. Need a specific dollar amount instead? Custom opens the tip sheet, enter a Custom Amount, see the New Total before anything is charged, or tap No Tip.
Nothing is forced. Leave the presets untouched and the charge goes through with no tip. No awkward workaround needed.
Where the money goes
- Tips belong to staff. The app treats them that way in the math, not just in spirit.
- Refunds don't claw tips back. Refund an order and the tip stays with the person who earned it, the refund math excludes it automatically. You don't have to do anything.
- Find the running total in your reports, the Tips Collected line in your financial summary, right alongside sales and tax.
If something's off
- "My checkout has no tip step." You're set up as retail, that's by design, not a bug. Food, drink, and service business types carry the tip step.
- Customer picked the wrong preset before paying. Tap a different preset or Custom to correct it, the tip isn't real until the charge goes through.
- The math looks odd on a discounted order. Percent presets calculate from the order's subtotal. For a "just make it $5" customer, Custom Amount is faster than arguing with percentages.
